Everybody Has Something to Lose and Gain

Greatness, it is something we all want to achieve at one level or another. I posted the picture below of a sculpture in my office that always reminds me to never give up. Staying motivated and committed can be a helluva chore, but if you can just stick to it you will get to wherever it is that you want to be and beyond. Doing this means, to me, sticking to it even through the weekend. For many, Monday is the start of a countdown to Friday and Friday is the finish line to doing nothing. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good thing to take a moment to unwind and relax, but doing so for at least 104 days out of the year gets you nowhere.

Everybody Has Something to Gain

People often ask me “how do you do so much?” or “how do you manage to never give up?” and the answer is a hard one. I believe it is just something in me that keeps me from never considering failure but at the same time, welcoming failure to build experience because success comes from experience, and experience only comes through action. With that being said, there are so many resources out there to gain knowledge on the topic of experience. There are plenty of greatly successful people out there who offer infinite resources to help you figure shit out. Some examples are below:

The list can go on and on. If none of the above interest you then do a simple Google search and find something that does based on whatever it is you need to improve on. It could be a blog post, newsletter, podcast, YouTube channel, or a book. Whatever it is, dedicating your spare time to self improvement not only helps you make more out of your time for production but helps you grow long term as well. Sitting on the couch scrolling through Instagram liking motivational memes will not help you, it will only drive you into a dark depressed state which you feel like you will never get out of. Simply put, taking time for self improvement helps you turn time into money. And let’s face it, we all plenty of time.

Sadly, often times when I share these resources with people looking for that beacon of hope (which really, only you can find on your own) they fire back with something like “I don’t listen to podcasts because only people who have nothing to lose make them” yet the also would never consider advice from an average Joe because “he isn’t really successful.” But the fact of the matter is, anyone willing to offer you advice does has something to lose because they are not being paid to give you free advice that could be a valuable stream of income for them. Yes, some sources do make their streams monetized but plenty of others do not. For example, it takes a lot of time and money for someone like Gary Vaynerchuk and Andy Frisella to create and distribute the quality content that they provide while also running multi-million dollar businesses to create income for hundreds of employees who rely on their ability to create a profitable business, not provide free motivational content.

Even you have something to lose! By not even considering advice from people at any level of success, you are missing out on the opportunity to build off of someones failures. Achieving greatness and success does require failing, but if you can learn from someone else’s mistakes and see those mistakes heading at you, then you are more than ready to navigate those challenges and save yourself some time at failure. Listening to feedback and advice applies to everyone as well, whether you are looking for a new job, looking to make more of your current career, or even if you are considering starting up a business. Valuable advice coming from real life experience only helps you gain ground to wherever it is that you want to go.

Three Tips for Small Business Owners

With all of that being said, there are always topics that overlap between influencers and motivational speakers and it is best to spot them as you can so that you can compare statements and results to help you find your own path. Keep in mind, the path that you end up creating is something that you too can share in the future. At any rate, below are three tips for business owners that are often overlapping topics, or even the basis of topics.

  1. The channel of least resistance. It is common knowledge that going grassroots with your local market is generally the best way to build your business. Local business turns into referral business which is great because it means that customers are sending you business versus you using up valuable time to find new business. A lot of new business owners tend to forget this as they think they need to be dumping hundreds or thousands of dollars into ad campaigns to get business. That is a double whammy on expenses because not only are you burning up cash on ads but you are also spending time either learning how to do it or finding someone to create and manage ads for you when all along you could have reached out to local businesses, friends, neighbors, or coworkers to help you grow your brand. Simply put, local clients and partnerships will bring you big results.
  2. Welcome failure and pivot quickly. It sounds crazy to say something like “welcome failure” but it’s true. All too often people will play it safe in hopes to minimize a run in with failure, however, failure is one of the best things that can happen to you. By experiencing failure and knowing how it came about, you can prepare yourself to get around a near miss in the future. Which is why you need to be able to pivot quickly. Knowing when to pivot, and how to pivot, without losing touch of what your business is about is one of the best attributes that you can have as a small business owner. Being able to do so keeps your brand relevant and successful no matter what challenges come your way.
  3. Remember to seek opportunity. So many times people will find their channel of success and then just stick to that. They take the approach of just milking it while it is good. Staying focused on your business is great, staying focused on one stream of revenue is terrible. Opportunity is everywhere and as a business owner you need to be seeking opportunity at all times and knowing when to create a strategy to go after it.

I have been around small business and entrepreneurs nearly all of my life. I have seen the bad, and I have seen the good. I have seen people be driven into dark places and lose, I have also seen them turn their losses around and come out on top. In the end, you just have to be open minded no matter what is you are doing. Everyday wont be a victory, that is a fact. There will be times when things go completely south it is up to you to muster up and conquer. It is extremely easy to accept defeat and sit at rock bottom when getting to the top requires constant effort and determination. Wherever you are in life, remember that when you win so does everyone else. When small business wins, communities win. When you win at your career, your family wins. We don’t just win for ourselves, we win for those around us. So take advice when you can and make it something that can help you prosper.
